CITY OF MALOLOS – In order to secure the health of mothers and their newborns as well, the Provincial Government of Bulacan (PGB) conducted the Bulacan Inception Workshop: Expanding Benefits of Safe Motherhood Program through Private-Public Partnership held at the BarCie Intl., University of Regina Carmeli in this city, recently.

The said workshop was made possible in cooperation with CHD and USAID’s Private Sector Mobilization for Family Health Project Phase 2 (PRISM II).

It aims to strengthen the partnership between private and public sectors to lessen the number of deaths caused by inappropriate child delivery.

Public Health Officer Dr. Jocelyn Gomez said that some of the primary causes of neonatal and maternal deaths are giving birth with the help of “hilot” instead of going to a clinic or hospital and irregular consultation with a doctor to monitor the condition of both the mother and her unborn child.

Giving birth thru the help of “hilot” is discouraged by doctors because of the danger it may cause to the mother and the child. However, the PGB is thinking of alternative jobs to offer to these “hilot” in order to help them support their families.

Moreover, Dr. John Wesley Dulawan, Deputy Chief of PRISM II explained the measures to avoid this kind of incident and among them is getting pregnant at the right age, birth spacing, and absolute self-care during pregnancy.

Provincial Administrator Jim Valerio said that the PGB is not only committed in protecting the right of people to health care but also to instill in them the importance of it.

“Despite this noble aspiration of enacting long term measures and valuable programs aimed at promoting the health of our people, PGB cannot propagate alone the realization of these goals, it requires indispensable cooperation and participation of the private sector,” said Valerio.

Meanwhile, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that the government is doing its share in boosting the health care in the province thru improving the facilities of public hospitals, additional medical equipment to be able to respond to the rising need of the Bulakenyos, establishing of the hemodialysis center, renovation of the emergency room in BMC and free medicine and check ups during people’s day.###
