CITY OF MALOLOS— Department of Agriculture Sec. Proceso Alcala conferred Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado the Second Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award for Bulacan Province as part of the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony that was held at the Philippine International Convention Center recently.

According to Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita Flores, Executive Director IV of the National Nutrition Council, the results of the National Nutrition Evaluation Team (NET) validation visit last June 4 to 8, 2012 affirmed the efficient and effective management of the provincial nutrition program which leads to the downward trend in malnutrition status of preschool and school children and their families in the community.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Rowena Tiongson said that the province was able to sustain its intensified efforts to improve the nutrition situation.

“It is brought about by Governor Alvarado’s efforts to deliver an integrated package of nutrition and health services through the “Kapitolyo sa Barangay” or KSB. Among the services are medical/dental check-ups, multivitamins supplementation, and food packages for indigent families,” said Tiongson.

Alvarado said that aside from the KSB, other nutrition programs and activities that are being implemented in the province are Gulayan sa Bakuran which promotes the production and consumption of so-called five vegetables- malunggay, saluyot, kulitis, kamote and sili; Luntiang Bakuran sa Bulacan which encourages families to tend their gardens; and Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, a nutrition education strategy.

“We owe this achievement to all the Bulakenyos for their participation in the nutrition programs particularly the members of the local nutrition committees and volunteers such as Lingkod sa Linggap sa Nayon and Mother Leaders. We will continue to implement and strengthen these programs to build a well-nourished and more productive citizenry,” added Alvarado.

Aside from Bulacan, other winners of the Second Year Crown Award are Tubigon, Bohol; Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental; and Province of South Cotabato.

The Second Year CROWN Maintenance award is given to a municipality, city or province that has been adjudged by the NET as outstanding in the implementation of its nutrition action plan for more than three consecutive years. Recipients of the CROWN 1st and 2nd Year Maintenance Award will receive a plaque of recognition and the chance to vie for the next higher award next year. ###
