CITY OF MALOLOS— The Provincial Government of Bulacan through the Provincial Public Health Office joined for the first time in the AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2013 held at the Capitol Gymnasium yesterday with the theme “In solidarity, Join hands and work together in response to HIV” in memory of all the people who died of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) complications.

The theme emphasizes the need for people living with and affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) to join hands and work together to address HIV.

“It’s been two decades and HIV/AIDS remain as a problem and this should be a concern of everyone. Since then, 30 milllion people have already died of this and there are 34 million others that are still living with AIDS,” said DILG Usec Austere Panadero.

He also said that every two hours, one Filipino is infected with HIV.

“Sa Pilipinas, mula noong 1984 hanggang sa kasalukuyan, meron tayong 12,000,791 that have been diagnosed as people living with HIV.

Dr. John Ferchito L. Avelino, executive director of the Philippine National Aids Council (PNAC) encouraged everyone to help and explain that solidarity in communities is essential to reduce stigma and promote the involvement of people living with HIV in order to ensure a more effective HIV response.

Tandaan po natin, everyone has a unique role to play to prevent the spread of this deadly virus” Avelino said.

Meanwhile, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that Bulakenyos should cooperate and help in the information dissemination to help prevent the ballooning of people living with HIV/AIDS.

As a move to support the battle against HIV/AIDS, Alvarado issued an Executive order No. 1 s 2013 entitled “Creation of the Provincial AIDS Council in the province of Bulacan. The council will be the central advisory, planning and policy making for the comprehensive and the integrated HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control.

Also part of the program were the oath taking of the Bulacan AIDS Council, League of Cable TV Operators in Bulacan and the presentation of audio visual about AIDS.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is one of the world’s oldest and largest grassroots mobilization campaigns for HIV awareness in the world which started in 1983.###
