700 intellectually disabled Bulakenyos to be spared from eye sight complications

CITY OF MALOLOS- Approximately 700 intellectually disabled Bulakenyo individuals will have a clearer vision as the Provincial Government of Bulacan through the Bulacan Medical Center (BMC) Eye Center and Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) launches the “First Special Olympics-Opening Eyes” program on August 19, 2013, 8:30 am at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium in this city.

The Sight Saving Month themed as “Eye Care for You” is open to all Bulakenyos with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, global development delay, slow learners, autism, attention deficit disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that the program is one way of showing love and care to the intellectually disabled persons.

“Ito ay isang paraan ng pagpaparamdam sa ating intellectually disabled Bulakenyos na sila rin ay lubos na mahalaga sa atin,” the governor said.

According to BMC Eye Center officer-in-charge Mildred Pre, the project aims to search possible athletes with intellectual disability but in good health to be trained by LCIF and to represent the Philippines internationally.

Pre added that the participants will undergo vision screening and several eye tests like auto-refraction, visual acuity test, color blindness test, stereopsis, and ophthalmoscopy.

Thirty volunteer ophthalmologists all over the country and 20 optometrists from Centro Escolar University-Mendiola will conduct the vision tests.

Pre also said that LCIF will sponsor the eye operation of the physically fit attendees.

“If found healthy pero may cataract sila or for operation ang mata nila, ipapa-schedule sila for operation at sagot lahat ng Lions Club,” Pre said.

In addition, the said Bulakenyos will also receive free eye glasses.

Meanwhile, Department of Health-National Chlamydia Screen Programme Chairman Noel Chua and LCIF District Governor 301-D2 Benilda Cuerpo are expected to grace the launch in Monday as the guests of honor.

The Sight Saving Month is in accordance to Administrative Order No. 179 s. 2004 also known as “Guidelines for the Implementation of the National Prevention of Blindness Program”. ###
