CITY OF MALOLOS- Braving heavy downpours and wet mountain trails, members of the Provincial Multi-Sectoral Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force (PAILTF) continues to pounce hard against timber poachers ravaging the forest covers of the mountains of eastern Bulacan, particularly along the watershed areas of Angat and Ipo dams.

The PAILTF team, formed by Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado to intensify the crackdowns against illegal loggers and protect the watershed areas, scored anew last Saturday seizing some 3, 857 board feet of illegally cut logs in Sitio Ipo, san Mateo, Norzagaray town.

This brings to more than 20,000 board feet the total of hot lumbers that the PAILTF confiscated during a series of non-stop operations that began Tuesday last week.

The governor also sent a legal team to assist the PAILTF operatives to retrieve already sawed and spliced logs which were discovered stockpiled in some residential compounds in several mountain villages in Norzagaray.

Alvarado also said that the Bulacan Environment and Natural Resources Office headed by Eugenio Payongayong will conduct a one day seminar for forest rangers and watchers task to guard the watershed areas and other forest covers in the mountains of northeastern Bulacan.

The governor reiterated that cutting of trees along the watershed areas of Angat and Ipo dams is strictly prohibited. He also said that legal teams are now also studying the cancellation of permits of some sash factories and shops in Norzagaray and San Jose del Monte City which are being suspected of buying the Illegally cut lumbers.

He also lamented that a big part of the forest covers of the watershed area in Ipo dam has already been denuded.

Bro. Martin Francisco, founding chairman of the Sagip Sierra Madre Foundation, disclosed that illegal loggers are getting more sophisticated, well financed and well equipped.

“Bago pa kami makarating ay natitimbrehan na sila at kadalasan ay nakakatakas. Naiiwanan na lang ang mga putol at tabas nang mga table ng puno. They can run but we will give them no quarters, hindi kami maglulubay sa pagbabantay at pagliliugtas ng ating kagubatan,” Francisco said.###
