CITY OF MALOLOS – In a bid to promote public awareness and efficient disaster response capability, the Office of Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III in cooperation with the Provincial Government of Bulacan headed by Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado led the 11th Disaster Risk Reduction and Multi-Hazard Awareness Forum recently at the The Pavilion, Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center in this city.

The forum was able to address the most pressing concerns of the Republic Act 10121 or Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 where it states the responsibility of the key players for setting the direction, development, implementation and coordination of disaster risk management programs in its area of jurisdiction.

Around 900 participants that include local officials, members of academe, community leaders, media, various non-governmental organizations and socio-civic groups were encouraged to continuosly enhance participation on disaster risk reduction and management programs such as survival techniques, giving first aid and others.

Pimentel, chairman of Committees on Justice and Electoral Reform in the Philippine Senate, and president of PDP-Laban political party, cited in his convenor’s message “Disaster risk reduction is the collective responsibility of the people and the government has the duty to protect the people, save lives and properties and mitigates the effects of disasters and worsening impact of climate change. A well-prepared citizenry can truly contribute to disaster risk reduction".

Alvarado thanked Pimentel for the latter’s comment about the readiness of Bulacan because its people are in good hands with their governor.

“Educating the people is an important mission and vigilance is a MUST. Sa tuwi-tuwina ay dapat buo ang loob sa oras ng kalamidad o panganib at kailangang alam ang gagawin kaya naman pinapalawak natin ang pagkalat ng mga mahalagang impormasyon,” Alvarado said.

Participants of the forum were equipped with the Basics on Psychological Aid After Calamities by Thelma Barrera, Program Director of Mental Health and Psychosocial support of the National Center for Mental Health; “PROJECT NOAH” by Danilo Flores of the Department of Science and Technology; Basics on the Search and Rescue Operations by Team 505th Search and Rescue Operations of the Philippine Air Force; and Basics on Fire Protection by Dir. Mariano C. De Jesus, president of Bulacan State University.

Meanwhile, the PGB in cooperation with the Office of Civil Defense Region III will hold a DRRM Summit on June 26, 2014 in the same venue which aims local government units to come up with cost-effective risk reduction measures or action plans. ###
