CITY OF MALOLOS – Senator Cynthia Villar encouraged not only the Bulakenyos but all the Filipinos to unite and help each other in achieving personal and national freedom from the chains of poverty which has always remained a critical social problem in the country during the 118th Anniversary of Philippine Independence Day held at the historic Barasoain Church in this city, early this morning.

Anchored on the theme, “Kalayaan 2016 – Pagkakaisa, Pag-aambagan, Pagsulong” the senator challenged everyone to continue fighting for freedom, underscoring that unity is the key to gain success and independence from poverty and other problems of the Philippines.

“Napakarami pa nating dapat gawin upang makamtan ang kalayaan. Lahat tayo ay kailangang magsakripisyo at magsumikap para makamit ang inaasam nating sariling kalayaan at makalaya sa kahirapan na nagpapahirap sa ating buhay - ang kawalan ng trabaho, kakulangan sa edukasyon o matinding kahirapan,” Villar said.

The senator, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, said that there’s a brand new hope for the Philippines to achieve a sustainable and progressive economy from the help of the newly-elected government officials who promised to protect national democracy and take the country to greater heights of progress.

Meanwhile, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado acknowledged the immeasurable contribution of history in achieving freedom and stressed that it doesn’t stop there.

“Muli nating yakapin ang diwa ng pagkakaisa at muli nating sariwain ang pagsasakripisyo ng ating mga bayani na lumaban para sa ating kalayaan. Hindi lamang sa araw na ito natatapos ang ating pakikipaglaban upang makamit ang inaasam-asam nating pag-unlad,” the governor said.

Alvarado, who also won his third term as governor of Bulacan, also expressed his gratitude to the Bulakenyos for another opportunity to serve the province and continue his Seven Point Agenda with projects and programs designed to propagate the general welfare of his constituents.

Prior to this, Alvarado and Vice Gov. Daniel R. Fernando together with Villar and other government officials led the simultaneous raising of the Philippine flag at the patio of Barasoain Church followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the statue of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, president of the First Philippine Republic.

The event was made possible in cooperation with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and the Provincial History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office.

Independence Day (Araw ng Kalayaan) is an annual national holiday in the Philippines observed every June 12 as a commemoration of the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain on June 12, 1898.
