Bulacan ends Nutrition Month, vows continuous fight against malnutrition

CITY OF MALOLOS – The fight against malnutrition in the province of Bulacan has not come to an end as the Provincial Government of Bulacan (PGB) through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) vowed a continuous campaign against nutrition deficiencies during the culminating activity of the celebration of Nutrition Month held at The Hiyas Pavilion, Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center in this city, this afternoon.

With the theme, “First 1,000 Days ni Baby Pahalagahan para sa Malusog na Kinabukasan,” Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado highlighted the importance of proper infant and young child feeding practices, particularly exclusive breastfeeding for the achievement of child’s complete development.

“Buo ang aking paniniwala na ang malusog na pamayanan ang sandigan ng kaunlaran. Hindi lamang sa pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Nutrisyon natatapos ang ating kampanya laban sa malnutrisyon na talamak sa mga bata. Sama-sama nating mas pag-ibayuhin ang ating mga programang pang-nutrisyon na maghahatid ng malusog na pamayanan,” the governor said.

Department of Health (DOH) Assistant Secretary Maria Bernardita Flores, who spoke in behalf of the newly appointed DOH Sec. Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial, said that the community, particularly the parents play a significant role to improve the nutrition of their children through supporting the nutrition programs of the government.

Moreover, the culminating activity also recognized outstanding nutrition committees from 21 towns and three cities in the province for its commendable implementation of nutrition programs including the Municipality of Bulakan, which emerged as the Outstanding Municipality, followed by San Rafael on 2nd place and Municipality of Calumpit, which landed on the 3rd place.

Brgy. Tabing-Ilog, Marilao was also cited as Best Barangay in Nutrition while Brgy. San Jose, Bulakan was awarded 2nd place followed by Brgy. Malawak, Bustos on 3rd place.

PSWDO also recognized the 22 graduating Lingkod Lingap sa Ngayon who underwent Refresher Course and Capability Training last January to July of this year.

All winners received plaque of recognition and cash incentives from the PGB.

Prior to this, PSWD Officer Rowena Tiongson said that Bulacan is still the province in Central Luzon with the lowest prevalence rate of malnutrition and PGB will continue to uphold interventions in addressing the nutrition needs of the Bulakenyos.

The celebration of Nutrition Month is in accordance to Presidential Decree No. 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines that focuses on the nutrition and general health of every Filipinos.
