CITY OF MALOLOS- The Provincial Government of Bulacan, led by Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado, accepts the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) award during the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held at the Philippine International Convention Center recently.
Recognized as one of the best local implementers of nutrition programs, the province has the lowest prevalence of underweight preschool children in the country with three percent. The nutritional status of school children also improved from 9.2 percent malnutrition rate in 2008 to 6.9 percent in 2009.
Moreover, Governor Alvarado continues to implement new nutrition and related programs that benefit the Bulakenyos particularly the nutritionally at risk indigents.
Among the nutrition programs and activities that are being implemented in the province are Bisikleta Bilis Kita which is a poverty reduction project for families of malnourished children; May Hope sa Gulayan which promotes vegetable gardening in suburban communities; Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, a nutrition education strategy; symposium on breastfeeding for mothers and would-be couples; regular hemoglobin determination for pregnant and lactating mothers and annual conduct of the refresher course for Lingkod Lingap sa Nayon and Mother Leaders.
The CROWN award is given to a municipality, city or province that has been adjudged by the interagency regional nutrition evaluation team as outstanding in the region in the implementation of its nutrition action plan for three consecutive years.
Meanwhile, the Municipality of Plaridel also receives the Nutrition Hall of Fame Award for being recognized as the 2009 Nutrition Honor Awardee for their efforts to reduce malnutrition in their town for the past six years. ###
