De Lima commends Bulacan Provincial Jail

CITY OF MALOLOS- Department of Justice Sec. Leila De Lima praised the Bulacan Provincial Jail (BPJ) led by Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado for exercising true respect for human rights as she graced the kick off ceremony of the 5 Pillars of Justice Month with the theme “Katarungan at Kalikasan sa Maunlad at Luntiang Lalawigan ng Bulacan” held at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium yesterday.

“Among the prison institutions that I had visited, I saw a unique culture of discipline and cooperation inside the BPJ which promotes real reforms of the detainees,” said De Lima.
She also thanked Alfred Mendiola, an inmate of BPJ, for being cooperative in the investigation thus, testifying against a carnapping syndicate in Bulacan which led for the immediate movement of the case.

In this event, she also admire the initiative of the 5 Pillars of justice in Bulacan in integrating one pillar to another in creating concrete solutions for the problems particularly in the grassroots level.

“Humahanga ako sa inisyatibo ng LGU upang mabuksan ang papel ng 5 Pillar sa pagtugon sa problema sa kapaligiran. Justice and environment concerns are the pressing issues in the society, and it is very timely to create programs like this,” added De Lima.

Gov. Alvarado said that it is vital to make a strong foundation of the justice system and it involves the cooperation of all sectors to execute laws with fairness and respect to human rights in accordance to the mandate of the Philippine Constitution.

Among the activities scheduled for this month long celebration are livelihood and training seminar for the families of the Provincial Jail’s detainees and a series of seminars about Katarungang Pambarangay, Environmental Laws, Sextortion, Correction of Entries, Small Claims, Violence Against Women and Children, Dangerous Drug Act, and Execution of Compromise Agreement within the Barangay Level.

Also, there will be a tree planting activity along the Marilao River, blood-letting activity, Sports Fest for the detainees and Mini Olympics for the members of the 5 Pillars of Justice.
Wrapping up the celebration is the awarding of the winners on the Sportsfest and Mini Olympics to be held at the Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center.

The 5 Pillars are composed of the Prosecutor’s office headed by Fiscal Alfredo Geronimo; Philippine National Police headed by PS/Supt. Fernando Mendez Jr.; Regional Trial Court headed by Judge Renato Francisco; Probation and Parole Office/ PCSJMO consisted of CPPO Teresita Mascuñana, CPPO Cezar Lopez Jr., and CPPO Ramon De Leon; and Provincial Government of Bulacan led by Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado. ###
