CITY OF MALOLOS- Marking it as a non-working holiday in Bulacan, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado will also lead the commemoration of the 161st birthday of the Bulakenyo hero, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, at the Dambanang Marcelo H. del Pilar, San Nicolas, Bulakan, Bulacan on August 30 at 8 o’clock in the morning.

“Marcelo H. Del Pilar, also known as Plaridel, is one of our greatest propagandists who sought Philippine freedom through his pen. His legacy and example should be rekindled in the hearts and minds of our younger generation that’s why in this year’s celebration, we invited the students as well as other sectors of the community to join us in this commemoration,” said Alvarado.

With the theme, “Gat Marcelo H. del Pilar: Talas ng Panulat at Talino, Inspirasyon ng mga Pilipino”, the Provincial Government of Bulacan together with the Municipal Government of Bulakan and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, work hand-in-hand to assure that all systems go for this event.

“We would like to encourage not only the Bulakenyos, but as well as all the Filipinos, to join us in remembering the heroic deeds and sacrifices that M.H. del Pilar had done for our country,” said Provincial Administrator Jim Valerio.

Aside from the parade and wreath laying for Plaridel, Sylvia Santos-Pineda, great grandchild of Plaridel, will also be present in the celebration.

Marcelo H. Del Pilar was famous for being the editor of the newspaper Diariong Tagalog which strongly criticized the way the Spaniards ran the government and treated the people. He was also the editor of the La Solidaridad, the mouthpiece of the propagandists working for reforms for the Filipinos. He died on July 4, 1896 in Barcelona, Spain, because of tuberculosis. ###
