CITY OF MALOLOS- The spirit of bayanihan prevails as the Provincial Government of Bulacan, led by Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado together with Vice Governor Daniel Fernando receives the First Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance award during the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held at the Philippine International Convention Center recently.

The First Year CROWN Maintenance award is given to a municipality, city or province that has been adjudged by the national nutrition evaluation team as outstanding in the implementation of its nutrition action plan for more than three consecutive years.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Rowena Tiongson, said that the province was able to sustain its intensified efforts to improve the nutrition situation, wherein in the entire region of Central Luzon, it has recorded the lowest prevalence of underweight preschool and school children with only 2.4% and 6.8 % respectively.

She added that this is brought about by Governor Alvarado’s efforts to deliver an integrated package of nutrition and health services through the “Kapitolyo sa Barangay” or KSB. Among the services catered to 10, 240 indigent families from 569 barangays are medical/dental check-ups, multivitamins supplementation, and food packages.

Alvarado said that aside from the KSB, other nutrition programs and activities that are being implemented in the province are Gulayan sa Bakuran which promotes the production and consumption of so-called five vegetables- malunggay, saluyot, kulitis, kamote and sili; Luntiang Bakuran sa Bulacan which encourage families to tend their gardens; and Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, a nutrition education strategy.

“We owe this achievement to all the Bulakenyos for their participation in the nutrition programs particularly the members of the local nutrition committees and volunteers such as Lingkod sa Linggap sa Nayon and Mother Leaders. We will continue to implement and strengthen these programs to build a well-nourished and more productive citizenry,” added Alvarado. ###
