Bulacan bags another award in nutrition

CITY OF MALOLOS – The Provincial Government of Bulacan (PGB) added another feather on its cap after being adjudged by the Regional Nutrition Committee as First Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) during the awarding ceremony held at the Benigno Aquino Hall, Capitol Grounds, City of San Fernando, Pampanga yesterday morning.

Aside from the said regional award, the Province of Bulacan led by Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado also received the First Year CROWN Maintenance award given by the National Nutrition Committee last October.

The said award is given to a municipality, city or province that has been appraised by the national nutrition evaluation team as outstanding in the implementation of its nutrition action plan for more than three consecutive years.

As his flagship program, Gov. Alvarado delivers an integrated package of nutrition and health services through “Kapitolyo sa Barangay” (KSB). Among the services are medical/dental check-ups, multivitamins supplementation and food packages to 10,240 indigent families and families with underweight children from its 21 towns and 569 barangays.

“Aside from the KSB, the other nutrition programs and activities that are being implemented in Bulacan are Gulayan sa Bakuran, which promotes the production and consumption of so-called High Five Vegetables such as malunggay, saluyot, kulitis, kamote and sili; Luntiang Bakuran, which encourage families to tend their gardens and Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, a nutrition education strategy,” Alvarado said.

The PGB received a plaque of recognition for this award.

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Paombong got the highest point on the said evaluation thus received the Municipal Green Banner Award for being the most outstanding municipality in the province and Regional Green Banner Award for being the most outstanding municipality in the Region.

Also, Angelina Espiritu of Hagonoy, Bulacan was hailed 2nd runner up as the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar while Teodora Cruz of the City of Malolos got the Provincial/City Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar.

Mr. Jonathan Sy-Alvarado graced the event to represent his mother, 1st District Congresswoman Ma. Victoria Sy-Alvarado as the guest of honor and shared some words with regard to nutrition. ###
