CITY OF MALOLOS- A total of 139 pieces of assorted squared timbers and one chainsaw were confiscated thru the joint operation on anti-illegal logging at the Angat and Ipo watershed areas located at Barangay San Mateo, Norzagaray, Bulacan since Tuesday.

Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado through the Bulacan Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) together with the National Power Corporation-Angat Watershed Area Team (NPC-AWAT), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), 56th IB of the Philippine Army and Sagip Sierra Madre Environmental Society, Inc (SSMESI), conducted the operation which started on January 3 expanding the search from Sitio Binibit to Sitio Malataeng Kalsada.

“We received reports that armed illegal loggers were seen in those areas. We immediately responded and conducted investigations with the help of DENR, the 56th IB under Col. Hilario Lagnada and Sagip Sierra Madre Environmental Society Inc (SSMESI),” Alvarado said.

According to Bro. Martin Francisco of SSMESI, they made sure that the operation was fully-documented and the group had coordinated with the barangay officials since some logs were found in some of the houses of the residents.

“Sa Sitio Binibit mayroong halos 1,080 board feet na tablon ang nakuha samantala sa Malataeng Kalsada naman ay 800 board feet at sa labas ng Ipo gate ay halos 700 board feet, na may kabuuang 2,580 board feet na kung imu-multiply sa halagang P50 ay magreresulta ng halagang P129,000 lahat,” added Francisco.

BENRO chief Atty. Rustico “Teddy” De Belen reported that among the confiscated logs yesterday 41 pieces are under the custody of NPC AWAT while the remaining 36 pieces are under the custody of DENR-CENRO which were directly delivered at 707 Central Wood for safekeeping at Tabang, Guiguinto.

The governor emphasized that illegal logging operations at the watershed areas should be stopped to protect the area as well as the mountains of eastern Bulacan.

“We will continue to intensify operations against illegal logging and other unlawful activities that cause irrevocable damages to the environment and to our people as well,” Alvarado said. ###
