CITY OF MALOLOS- “Long live the Republic of the Philippines!”

With these words, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado encouraged the entire Filipino people to relive the memories and heroism of the Filipino revolutionaries that paved the way to the country’s independence during the commemoration of the 113th anniversary of the First Philippine Republic held at the historic Barasoain Church yesterday.

In his speech, Alvarado compared this day to a comet which gave light to the darkness of the night, as this event started the desire to fight for freedom.

The program started with the arrival of military honors for Vice President of the Philippines, Hon. Jejomar Binay as the guest speaker.

The vice president also liken Barasoain Church to an island that is filled with colorful and exciting parts of history for it is here that Malolos Congress ratified the Constitution of the First Philippine Republic.

Alvarado clarified that though the nation is simultaneously celebrating the Chinese New Year, there is a more important reason to celebrate, that this is the day of announcing the Filipino’s aspiration to become free.

Ma. Serena I. Diokno, head of the National Historical Institute of the Philippines, explained the important role that this day played on the efforts of our ancestors to be independent.

Also present during the event were Vice Gov. Daniel Fernando, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, representatives of each district of Bulacan, municipal and town mayors, and Hon. Cesar Virata, grandson of Emilio Aguinaldo and Chairman of Cavite Historical Society.###
