CITY OF MALOLOS-Bulakenyos with cataract and pterygium (pugita) problems will now get the opportunity to be operated thru Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado’s free eye operation program dubbed as “Liwanag sa Mata, Handog ko sa Inyo” on February 8-10, 2012 at Calumpit District Hospital.

Prior to the free operation, an eye screening took place yesterday, January 30 for the Bulakenyos who want to undergo the said surgical procedure.

Eight to ten ophthalmologists from the Department of Health (DOH) will perform the operation to approximately 200 Bulakenyos suffering from cataract and pterygium problems.

Also, there will be a post cataract operation for the patients at Bulacan Medical Center (BMC) on February 20.

“Batid natin kung gaano kahirap ang magkaroon ng karamdaman sa mata. Sabi nga nila, ang ating mata ang salamin ng ating kaluluwa kung kaya’t marapat lamang na ito’y ating pangalagaan at panatilihing malusog. Ang libreng operasyon na ito ay handog natin para sa ating mga mahal na kalalawigan na walang kakayahang magpa-opera,” Alvarado said.

According to Dr. Mildred Pre, aside from the medical clearance to be issued by the doctor, the patients must undergo a series of laboratory tests like complete blood count (CBC), fasting blood sugar (FBS) test, and electrocardiogram (ECG) to ensure that the patients are physically fit to undergo the operation.

Last year, a total of 268 cataract and pterygium patients underwent the free eye operation program of PGB wherein 60 patients were operated last June, 80 in August and 128 in October. ###
