CITY OF MALOLOS – In observance of the Sight Saving Month, the Provincial Government of Bulacan through the Provincial Public Health Office will open the celebration come August 6, 2012 at 10 in the morning at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium in this city.

With the theme “Eye Care for You”, the PGB is one with the DOH’s mission that aims to promote the importance of proper eye care and prevent blindness through the development of human resource, infrastructure, and appropriate technology.

Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that this is a good venue for Bulakeños to have their eyes checked because caring for the eyes is caring for one’s self too.

“Huwag na nating hintayin na mabulag at lumala tayo, magpatingin ng mas maaga, ang mata ay napakahalaga, kaya ingatan natin. Dito nga sa Bulacan Medical Center, sa tulong ng Lion’s Club Internation at ng NCSP, malapit nang matapos ‘yung eye center at ito ay para talaga sa ating mga mamamayan,” added Alvarado.

According to surveys and records of the DOH, cataract and glaucoma are the leading causes of blindness in the country and in the whole world as well.

Meanwhile, Dra. Mildred Pre, Provincial Coordinator for Eye Care Program said that there will be free cataract and vision screenings from 1-5 in the afternoon on the same day.

“Meron na tayong mahigit 300 pre-identified clients sa vision at cataract screening. Sa vision screening, ito ‘yung para sa mga 59 years old pababa at ‘yung mga DepEd pre-identified children with eye problem, sa cataract screening naman, ito yung para sa mga Bulakenyo na 60 years old pataas,” said Pre.

Prior to this, a short program will be held which will start with the wreath laying ceremony at Dr. Jose Rizal’s monument being an eye doctor himself, to be followed by the message of DOH Assistant Secretary Dr. Enrique A. Tayag, MD as the guest of honor and the signing of commitment, mutual cooperation and support of those who will attend.

Among the expected guests are Dr. Noel G. Chua Chairman of the National Committee on Sight Prevention (NCSP), Mr. Stephen Alcantara, coordinator of International Agency for Prevention of Blindness, Dr. Leonor Macalintal Almoro, president of Optometric Association of the Philippines, Lion Felix G. Tienzo, District Governor of Multiple District 301-D2, Dr. Franck Diza, Medical Officer IV of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control (DOH) and Secretary General Tomas Gualberto A. Meneses of NCSP.

Moreover, Dr. Pre added that there are four regular programs for eye are in the province.

“Yung ating libreng operasyon sa katarata ay ginagawa natin quarterly, ito ay 24 hours, non-stop operation, ngayong 3rd quarter naka-schedule ito sa August 23-26 sa Calumpit District Hospital. Meron din tayong Error of Refraction kung saan nagbibigay tayo ng libreng salamin, ‘yung ating childhood blindness para sa mga mag-aaral, may Vitamin A supplementation tayo at ‘yung primary eye care para sa ating mga Barangay health worker,” said Pre.

The month of August was declared as the Sight Saving Month pursuance to Presidential Proclamation No. 40, a DOH program that aims to prevent blindness and implemented by the Degenerative Disease Office in cooperation with NGO’s (National Committee for Sight Prevention) and other government agencies.###
