February 3, non-working holiday in Bulacan

CITY OF MALOLOS – It is a non-working holiday on February 3, 2014 in Bulacan.

Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that on that day, the province will commemorate the 87th birth anniversary of former secretary and senator Gat Blas F. Ople, who is considered one of the most outstanding sons of Bulacan.

The Provincial Government of Bulacan through the Provincial Youth, Sports, Employment, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office, family members and colleagues of the late Ka Blas will mark the occasion in front of the Gat Blas Ople Building, Capitol Compound in this city at eight o’ clock in the morning.

In remembrance of Ka Blas, Alvarado , Vice Gov. Daniel Fernando and the family members of the Ople clan will lead the offering of flowers at the Ople monument located at the Sentro ng Kabataan, Sining at Kultura ng Bulacan.

A short program will also be held wherein Board Member Felix Ople, the great statesman’s son, will again give his “tugon” or brief message to be followed by a banquet.

Ople is also recognized as “Father of Overseas Employment" and the author of the Philippine Labor Code wherein he protects the rights of workers. He also served as Senate President, Foreign Affairs Secretary and Labor and Employment Minister. He became the first Filipino president of the International Labor Organization in 1975.

Bulakenyos considered him as their inspiration because of his outstanding leadership and public service not just in Bulacan but in the whole country.

Through his overseas employment program, lots of jobs were created for millions of Filipinos thus transformed their lives in the Philippines by giving them disposable income over and above subsistence.

Ople was born in Hagonoy, Bulacan on February 3, 1927 to Felix Antonio Ople, a craftsman who repaired boats, and Segundina Fajardo.

He died on December 14, 2003, in the service of his country while en route to Bahrain on diplomatic mission as the country’s Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs.###
