CITY OF MALOLOS – The Provincial Government of Bulacan in cooperation with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) will commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of the hero and patriot Mariano Ponce by blessing his new monument on March 22, 2014, 7:00 am at the town of Baliwag.

The commemoration will begin with a holy mass at the San Agustin Parish followed by the raising of the Philippine flag and speech of the town’s mayor, Carolina Dellosa.

Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that heroes from Bulacan gave their greater efforts to the country’s quest for freedom and independence.

“Ang Bulacan ay kilala sa ating mga dakilang bayani kaya’t nararapat lang na bigyan sila ng karangalan at pagpupugay tulad na nga lang nitong si Mariano Ponce na lubos na tumulong sa kanyang kapwa bayani na makamit ang ating kalayaan,” the governor said.

Alvarado and NHCP Executive Director Carmina Arevalo will lead the wreath laying ceremony at the new monument of Mariano Ponce together with other Bulacan government officials.

It will be followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of exhibits at the SM City Baliwag Event Center and awarding of essay writing contest winners.

Mariano Ponce Collantes was born in Baliwag, Bulacan on March 23, 1863 and known for joining Jose Rizal, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Lopez Jaena, and other patriots in the crusade for the much needed Philippine reform.

He died on May 23, 1918 in the Civil Hospital in Hong Kong. His remains lie in Cementerio del Norte, Manila. ###
