CITY OF MALOLOS – A two-day course designed to orient Dumagat Health Workers and Community leaders regarding TB control program will be held by the Provincial Government of Bulacan through the Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO) on March 24, 2014 at NPC, Sitio Hilltop, San Lorenzo, Norzagaray, Bulacan.

In line with the World Tuberculosis Day, the activity aims to set up a community-based TB management program through active referrals and case holding mechanism viable for Dumagat communities, define and consolidate roles of the Dumagat community stakeholders namely the Chieftains, Tribal Health Workers, Dumagat Elders, Governor and Vice Governor in managing TB program at their community level and explain their role as community educators.

“The observance is an opportunity to raise public awareness of tuberculosis na nananatili pa ring epidemya sa maraming parte ng daigdig at ‘yung mga ginagawa para malutas ang suliranin dito, pero dapat nating isipin na hindi ito tuwing TB day lang, araw-araw mag-ingat tayo at tumulong tayo na mawala na ang sakit na ito,” Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said.

Also, PPHO Dr. Jocelyn Gomez said that the orientation aims to discuss the proper TB referral system.

“Sa orientation na ito, idi-detalye kung paano nga ba ang TB referral system at ‘yung case holding mechanism mula sa mga lugar nila hanggang sa pinakamalapit na TB DOTS,” Gomez said.

Meanwhile, Alvarado stressed the important role of Dumagats in the province thus challenging the Dumagat leaders to take responsibility in the healthcare of their people.

“Bawat naninirahan sa Bulacan, may magagawa para sa kapwa at sa lalawigan. Maliit man, kaunti man kapag pinagsama-sama, ang inakala nating hindi kaya magagawa nating isakatuparan, kaya mahalaga na matuto din ‘yung ating mga Dumagat, sisimulan natin sa mga lider nila hanggang eventually ma-educate na natin silang lahat na protektahan ang kanilang mga kalusugan,” Alvarado explained.

The governor will also turn over the JOB AIDS and TB IEC materials.
Among the participants are the Tribal Governor Severino Cruz, Vice Tribal Governor Norma Roque, the Tribal Secretary, Treasurer, the 19 Chieftains, Committee Heads, Tribal Health Workers, Mother Leader, Tribal Chieftain’s Secretary, and the Provincial Dumagat Coordinator.

The said activity will be administered by the USAID funded Innovations and Multisectoral Partnerships to Achieve Control of Tuberculosis (IMPACT) Project led by the Philippine Business for Social Progress that seeks to improve tuberculosis (TB) case detection and cure rates.

According to the World Health Organization, TB is an infectious bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which most commonly affects the lungs. It is transmitted from person to person via droplets from the throat and lungs of people with the active respiratory disease.

World TB Day falling on March 24th each year commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. ###
