CITY OF MALOLOS - In line with the celebration of the National Environment Month, the Provincial Government of Bulacan through its Bulacan Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) announced the programs lined up for the benefit of the environment held at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium yesterday.

With this year’s theme “Ilog Ko, Irog Ko” which emphasizes the need to nurture the river system in the province as well as the different waterways, the BENRO is continuously cleaning canals and creeks all over the province and scheduled tree planting activities on embankments to serve as protection from soil erosion.

“January pa lang sinimulan na natin ang decloggings at paglilinis kasama rin po sa aming programa ang rehabilitasyon at regreening ng mga mined-out/quarried areas upang mapanumbalik ang dati at maayos na kalagayan nito,” Elizabeth Apresto, OIC of BENRO said.

Apresto also announced that under EO No.2014-7, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado declared the 25th day of June every year as an Arbor Day or Tree Planting Day in Bulacan requiring all able-bodied citizens to plant one tree every year in accordance to Philippines Arbor Day.

They will also distribute 10,000 sacks to cities and municipalities for the removal of wastes and water lilies in the riverbanks with the help of Sagip Kalikasan Dulot ay Pangkabuhayan of the Villar Foundation.

In support to the said activity, DENR Sec. Ramon Paje donated 300,000 pieces of assorted seedlings through the efforts of Congresswoman Marivic R. Sy-Alvarado.

Alvarado said that everyone must be prepared to face the effects of climate change.

The governor added that BENRO, municipal and city ENROS must have river inventories to help monitor and alleviate water pollution and to not just focus on the Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando river system.

The month of June each year is declared as the Philippine Environment Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237 signed in 1998 by then President Corazon C. Aquino.###
