CITY OF MALOLOS – In support to reduce prevalence of avoidable blindness in the country, the Provincial Government of Bulacan (PGB) through the Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO) will kick off its Sight Saving Month celebration on August 4, 2014 at 10:00 in the morning at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium in this city.

With the themes “Eye Care for You” and “Alagaan ang Mata Mula Pagkabata Hanggang Pagtanda,” the Department of Health (DOH) with the cooperation of the PGB aims to promote the importance of proper eye care and blindness prevention through the incorporation of the principles of primary health care.

Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that this is a good a way to encourage Bulakenyos to undergo an eye examination because sometimes, they are unaware that their eyes are slowly deteriorating due to abuse.

“Huwag nating pabayaan na lumala ang panlalabo ng ating mga paningin dahil ito ang dahilan ng pagkabulag ng ilan sa ating mga kababayan at isa sa ating mga prayoridad na tulungan at hikayatin ang mga Bulakenyo na magpatingin upang maiwasan ang pagkabulag,” said Alvarado.

Dr. Mildred Pre, Provincial Coordinator for Eye Care Program, said that there will be free cataract operation and free prescription of eyeglasses for the Dumagats and other indigenous groups from DRT, Norzagaray, and the City of San Jose Del Monte.

“There will be free cataract operations and screening that will be conducted by our visiting ophthalmologists from BMC Eye Center and Vision Screening and refraction will be conducted by Optometrists from OAP-Bulacan Society,” said Pre.

According to DOH, the current estimated number of persons who are bilaterally blind in the country due to cataract, glaucoma and retinopathies is 569,072.

Prior to this, a short program with an inspirational message from Lion District Gov. Santi Lim will be held followed by the inauguration and unveiling of the Lions emblem at the BMC Eye Center and Stellaris Phaco-Retinal machine for the Bulakenyos and the oath taking ceremony of the members of the Provincial Eyesight Council.

Among the expected guests are the representatives from DOH National Committee for Sight Prevention headed by Mr. Steve Alcantara.

The month of August was declared as the Sight Saving Month pursuance to Presidential Proclamation No. 40 that promotes blindness prevention implemented by the Degenerative Disease Office of the National Committee for Sight Prevention and other government agencies.###
