DA grants P60 million assistance to Bulakenyo farmers and fisherfolks

CITY OF MALOLOS - Farmers and fisherfolks in Bulacan received a windfall of blessings from the Department of Agriculture (DA) to further boost their farm inputs and to acknowledge their efforts in alleviating poverty through agricultural and fishery production.

DA Secretary Proceso Alcala together with Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado and Vice Gov. Daniel R. Fernando distributed P60 million worth of different farm machineries, fish farm equipment and post-harvest facilities during the Farmers and Fisherfolks Forum held at the Guiguinto Municipal Gymnasium yesterday.

These machineries include seven HP pump and engine sets, tractors with implements, 190 portable solar lamps, seven units of tri-bike with plastic coolers, eight units of marine engine, eight units of non-motorized fiber-glass boats, 100 pcs of gillnet, two units of vacuum packaging machines and others.

The DA also distributed farm and fishery assistance including 2,500 mungbean seeds, 500,000 pcs of tilapia fingerlings, 100,000 pcs of bangus fingerlings, 3,000,000 pcs of vannamei post-larvae, 200 chickens and certificates of project and intervention allocation for different projects for sustainable farm and agri-fishery livelihood.

Among the other interventions from DA are the PRDP-Small Livelihood Project worth P1.45 million for the Hog Fattening Project of Umpucan Palay and Vegetable Growers Multi-Purpose Cooperative and the Free Range Chicken Production Project of San Ildefonso Vegetable and Palay Growers Multi-Purpose Cooperative worth P2.32 million.

Alvarado expressed his gratitude to the DA and to the secretary for their overwhelming support to Bulakenyo farmers and fishermen in terms of financial and technical know-how's in attaining sustainable agri-fishery income.

The governor also said that despite the rapid industrialization in the province, Bulacan continues to be a top supplier of vegetables and meat in the country and known for being a perennial recipient of major agri awards.
"Despite urbanization, hindi pa rin nawawala ang Bulacan sa listahan ng pinakamahuhusay na lalawigan sa buong bansa sa larangan ng agrikultura," Alvarado said.

Meanwhile, Alcala commended the contributions of Bulacan as the country’s top rice achiever for three years, surpassing their palay production targets, attaining higher average yield, encouraging more farmers to use quality seeds and appropriate technologies and prioritizing rice-related projects.

“Let us continue to pay tribute to the country’s farmers and fisherfolk, and at the same time provide them sustained assistance so we could attain national food sufficiency and security,” Alacala said.

Prior to this, the province of Bulacan and some of its towns and cities also received grants from Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and projects under the Bottom-Up-Budgeting including Organic Fertilizer Production Project in Guiguinto and Fingerling Dispersal and Sustainable Agri-Fishery Livelihood Project in Baliwag.

Thousands of farmers and fisherfolks who attended the forum had an opportunity to receive 15 carabaos, 50 bags of urea fertilizer, 30 solar lamps, 20 pcs of petromax lantern, 15 fishing boats with fiber glass, five knap sack sprayers, 14 grass cutters, two hand tractors as raffle prizes.

The province of Bulacan is one of the top ten provinces in the country with significant contribution to Rice Sufficiency Program of the DA.
