CITY OF MALOLOS – Department of Tourism Assistant Secretary Rolando Caņizal will lead thousands of Bulakenyos in the commemoration of the 118th Anniversary of Malolos Congress on September 15, 2016 at the historic Barasaoin Church in this city.

The program will kick off at 8:00 in the morning with a flag raising ceremony followed by the oath to the national flag and wreath laying ceremony at the statue of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the first president of the Philippines, to be led by Asec. Caņizal, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, Vice Gov. Daniel R. Fernando, district representatives of Bulacan, Mayor Christian Natividad and National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Chairman Maria Serena Diokno.

Other invited guests are senior citizens, students, teachers, non-government organizations, and other sectors in Bulacan.

Alvarado said that no matter how many years have passed; Filipinos should always look back and remember the first important document that was written in the country, the Malolos Constitution.

“This will always be a reminder, a proof that Filipinos are united in making the Philippines for the Filipino people. Pagkatapos ng napakahabang panahon na sumailalim tayo sa iba’t ibang bansa, kung kani-kaninong batas, dito, nagkaroon tayo ng matatawag na sariling atin, batas na para sa atin at nagbigay daan kung nasaan na tayo ngayon,” Alvarado said.

Some of the most important achievements of the Congress were the ratification of the independence proclaimed at Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898 on September 29, establishment of the Universidad Literatura de Filipinas and other schools and drafting of the Philippine Constitution.

Moreover, the day also marks the culmination of the weeklong celebration of Singkaban Festival, an annual provincial event where Bulakenyos’ rich cultural heritage, arts and traditions are featured.
