CITY OF MALOLOS – Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado relived the life and contributions of Gat. Marcelo H. Del Pilar before thousands of Bulakenyos who attended the 164th Birth Anniversary of the great propagandist at his shrine in San Nicolas, Bulakan, Bulacan earlier today.

The governor also said that luckier are those who are living in time of social networking technology because there is no need for them to solicit and beg for money unlike during Plaridel’s time.

Meanwhile, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s Chief of Staff Dr. Willy Buenaventura read the message of the senator who was the guest of honor and described Plaridel as an example of a good journalist.

“Plaridel is an example of how media can be a force of good. Despite all adversities of his time, Del Pilar used the power of the pen to go against the power filthy. Like Plaridel, we have to speak up against injustices. The media can contribute to social change, they should be proactive agents. The key to a healthy democracy is a vigilant media,” Cayetano said in his message.

He also mentioned the reason why he authored the Freedom of Information Bill in the senate.

“Vigilance is primarily the duty of the media but government t also needs to give media tools. Because I know that this will be an effective tool in making government processes more transparent, and media more empowered, this can only benefit the public at large who deserve accountable leaders. At the end of the day, we fight corruption for the people,” the senator said.

Earlier on, the celebration started with a civic parade to inform that every Bulakenyo is encouraged to join in remembering Plaridel’s contribution to the country which was immediately followed by the flag raising ceremony, oath to the flag and wreathe laying at Del Pilar’s shrine.

Plaridel is known as the Father of Philippine Journalism and Philippine Masonry. ###
