Bulacan to commemorate 89th birth anniversary of Ka Blas

CITY OF MALOLOS – Bulakenyos will once again gather to commemorate the 89th birth anniversary of Ka Blas Ople, one of the most outstanding sons of Bulacan.

On February 3, 2016 at 8:00 am, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy Alvarado will lead the commemoration with the theme, “Ka Blas, Huwaran ka sa isip, sa salita at sa gawa” at the Gusaling Gat Blas F. Ople in this city.

Alvarado said the Provincial Government of Bulacan through the Provincial History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office (PHACTO) has prepared a short program to rekindle Ka Blas’ selfless, dedicated and sincere service to the country.

Expected to grace the said event are Ople’s children, Susan “Toots” Ople and Board Member Felix Ople, family members, PGB officials and employees and National Historical Commission of The Philippines Bulacan-Zambales Head Alex Balagtas among others.

His daughter Susan Ople will lead the unveiling of Ka Blas’ bust while BM Felix Ople will represent the Ople family and give his “tugon” or brief message during the program.

The celebration also includes the opening of exhibit of the Hagonoy Art Group, a presentation of Ople’s heroic legacy and leadership.

Ople is also recognized as “Father of Overseas Employment" and the author of the Philippine Labor Code wherein he protects the rights of workers. He also served as Senate President, Foreign Affairs Secretary and Labor and Employment Minister. He became the first Filipino president of the International Labor Organization in 1975.

Through his overseas employment program, lots of jobs were created for millions of Filipinos thus transformed their lives in the Philippines by giving them disposable income over and above subsistence.

Bulakenyos considered him as their inspiration because of his outstanding leadership and public service not just in Bulacan but in the whole country.

Meanwhile, in accordance with Proclamation No. 1204, February 3, 2016 was declared as a special (non working day) in the Province of Bulacan to celebrate the birth anniversary of Ople.

Ople was born in Hagonoy, Bulacan on February 3, 1927 and died on December 14, 2003, in the service of his country as the country’s Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
