CITY OF MALOLOS – Senator Cynthia Villar encouraged some 600 vegetable growers and other stakeholders from all over the country to consider building farm schools in their respective areas to help boost the vegetable industry during the 15th National Vegetable Congress and Agro-Industrial Exhibit held at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium in this city, Thursday morning.

“It is really about time to highlight the vegetable industry lalo na in the context of food security and in line with the theme, the attainment of affordable and available food for every Filipino. Tandaan po natin farmers and fishermen are the majority sa ating bansa at kung magkakaroon ng farm schools, mapa-accredit sa TESDA, libre na po ang tuition fee nito, malaking bagay para sa bansa,” Villar said.

The event focused on discussing new technologies on seed, its breeding and proper post harvest handling of vegetable in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado shared that Bulakenyo vegetable growers produce more than 60 percent of vegetables available in all public markets in Metro Manila.

The governor also said that aside from the farmers, everyone should be educated about the importance of vegetables.

Daisy Duran of San Ildefonso Vegetable and Palay Growers Multi-Purpose Cooperative said that this is a great opportunity for all attendees to learn more and be part of a solution for concerns and issues through the resolutions that they will come up and be submitted to the Congress and Department of Agriculture.
