CITY OF MALOLOS- Sweet smiles were seen in the faces of the 23 children with cleft palate and harelip, after they successfully underwent an operation through a surgical mission dubbed as “Ngiti Mo, Sagot Namin” held at Baliwag District Hospital recently.

This free operation, sponsored by Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado and Philippine Band of Mercy, aims to correct this birth defect through surgery that may cost a patient from P40,000 to P80,000.

Organizers of this health mission said this operation is also crucial in boosting the confidence of the patients who are often subject of ridicule among their peers.

Esther Cinco, mother of a beneficiary, deeply expressed her gratitude for the free operation. She added that through this, her child will develop self-confidence and avoid being bullied.

Meanwhile, Gov. Alvarado vowed to conduct another surgical mission on July next year to coincide with the celebration of National Disability Prevention & Rehabilitation Week for those who were not able to qualify in the screening.

Prior to this activity, a mass screening and free consultation was conducted as part of the recent celebration of Singkaban Fiesta.

According to studies, approximately 1 out of every 700 infants is born with cleft palate or harelip. This happens when the tissues of the lip and/or palate of the fetus do not fuse very early in pregnancy. ###
