Friday, 03 September 2010
CITY OF MALOLOS – Two pro-environment and natural resources-related activities will highlight the Environment Day of Singkaban Fiesta on September 12, 2010.

The Provincial Government of Bulacan will host Takbuhan para sa Kalikasan, a seven-kilometer fun run for the rehabilitation of the Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando River System and Angat River.

According to Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado, aside from the benefits of running and the fun-filled experience that each participant could achieve from this activity, the real challenge among the Bulakeños is to run for a worthy cause.

Organizers said that on top of elevating the awareness level of the public, this is also a fund-raising fun run for the activities geared towards saving and restoring the beauty of the two major river systems in the province.

This year, the organizers target 1,500 participants comprising of students, government and private company employees, NGOs, and running enthusiasts.

Awards will be given to the fastest runners but all participants will be given a certificate of participation upon presentation of registered number after the event while first 100 registrants will be given a complementary t-shirt.

Simultaneously, there will be a tree planting activity that will take place in the different parts of the province including Brgy. Makinabang in Baliwag, DRT Highway in Pulilan, Riverbanks in Calumpit and Mac Arthur Highway in Malolos. About 2,000 hardwood and fruit bearing trees will be planted by local government officials, students and teachers.

These back-to back activities are only kickers to the province’s serious campaign to save and protect the environment and its abundant natural resources from degradation.

As one of the major thrusts of his administration, Alvarado vows to raise public consciousness on pressing environmental issues, and eventually elicit participation among the public to rally behind initiatives and efforts to preserve and protect the natural resources for the benefit of the future generation.
