Bulacan continues to fight against botcha

CITY OF MALOLOS— In a bid to control and eradicate smuggling and distribution of hot meat, the Provincial Government of Bulacan has stepped-up its campaign against the proliferation and shipment of the said meat through intensified monitoring of farms and transport of live stocks with the help of local media men, local police and encouraging barangay officials to also take responsibility.

This is after Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado announced that the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), which was previously under the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO), will now function and operate as a separate department beginning this month.

Alvarado designated Dr. Voltaire Basinang as provincial veterinarian. He also said that the Provincial Veterinary Office will be equipped with modern equipments and laboratories.

The governor also urged members of the local media to help the provincial government by helping the PVO through intensified information drive and in educating the public on how to avoid buying double dead meats.

Dr. Basinang said “we should insist our rights as a buyer, look for stamps and certification because when we stop supporting hot meat sellers, we can eventually beat them”.

Gov. Alvarado announced the formation of a new anti-hot meat task force composed of representatives from PVO, PAO, Bulacan Police Provincial Office, LGU’s and some members of local media headed by local journalist Cecilio Franista of Bulacan Newscatcher.

The announcement came after the Provincial Public Affairs Office headed by Maricel S. Cruz, in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Services, PVO, City Government of Meycauayan, local market officials of Sta. Maria and Meycauayan City, and representatives of San Miguel Foods Incorporated, conducted a one-day media tour to show that meats coming from Bulacan are being properly inspected before sold to the public.

“The PVO is regularly inspecting farms to ensure that they will be disease-free aside from manning 24 checkpoints to thwart attempts of unscrupulous traders in smuggling double dead meats,” Dr. Basinang added.

Mac Dormiendo and Dr. Ted Roralla of San Miguel Foods Inc., also showed an audio visual presentation to the strict bio-security measures being implemented and observed in their farms, particularly the farms operated by Monterey Foods Corporation, a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation, in San Miguel, Bulacan and other parts of the country.

Dormiendo said Monterey meat goes through a process that has passed the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point System, an international preventive quality management system designed to identify and prevent any potential hazards in the food.###
