CITY OF MALOLOS- The rehabilitation of Angat Dam is about to start after the Memorandum of Agreement as well as the contract between the two consultant companies regarding Angat Dam and Dyke Safety Program have been signed recently.

Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that the MOA states the conduct of feasibility study that will test the strength of Angat Dam at present.

“Ito ay may kinalaman sa lakas ng Angat Dam due to the presence of Marikina fault line. It’s already an old dam, 43 years old so marapat lang na magkaroon ng engineering remedial measures na kung sakaling lumitaw sa study na ang angat dam ay matatag na matatag so tayong mga bulakenyo pwede tayong matulog ng mahimbing pero kung sakaling hindi gaanong matatag ito, at ang sinasabi nila na we only have three years, ang dapat gawin ito’y bilisan natin, do some engineering remedial measures nang sa ganon masiguro nating matatag ang ating angat dam,” said Alvarado.

The MOA was signed by the stakeholders of the said dam which includes the Provincial Government of Bulacan, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA), Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management (PSALM), Department of Science and Technology (DOST ) among others.

Jose Dorado Jr., Principal Engineer, Engineering and Project Management Department of MWSS said that after the six-month study of the two chosen consultant companies, Engineering and Development Corporation of the Philippines (EDCOP) and Tonkin & Taylor, their recommendation will soon be implemented.

MWSS Administrator Gerardo Esquivel said, “as early as April 5, the President already approved to improve the study and eventual remediation of Angat Dam, this is not only because we want to remediate the dam but we want to be sure in water security.”

Esquivel also ensures the Province of Bulacan that they will also work on the water allocation from the said dam.

Alvarado also clarified that the effort in rehabilitating Angat Dam is for the betterment of the people of Bulacan. ###
