According to Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, he asked municipal and town mayors to set up flags as a reminder that Bulacan is a province of heroes who fought and offered their lives for freedom.

“Kung ang Baguio ay tanyag sa kanilang bulaklak at ang Pampanga naman ay sa kanilang makukulay na parol, nais nating itanghal ang dakilang lalawigan ng Bulacan bilang bayan ng mga bayani at sa makulay at mahalaga nitong bahagi sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas,” said Alvarado.

Meanwhile, Alex Balagtas of the National Historical Institute suggested for the said date to be declared as Republic Day and to further impart the importance of the celebration in schools by including it in their curriculum.

The program will start at exactly 6:30 a.m. in front of the Barasoain Church through arrival of military honors for the Vice President of the Philippines, Hon. Jejomar Binay as guest speaker.

It will be followed by the unveiling of the marker entitled “Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Y Famy” in his participation as general in many historical events that took place at the Barasoain Church and in the entire province, giving Bulacan a vital role in acquiring Philippine Independence. Afterwards, offering of flowers will take place at his monument.

Alvarado is expected to grace the event together with Vice-Gov. Daniel Fernando, representatives of each district of Bulacan including Hon. Marivic Sy-Alvarado from the first district, Mayor Christian Natividad, Vice Mayor Gilbert Gatchalian, Ma. Serena I. Diokno, head of the National Historical Institute, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and municipal and town mayors.

At the latter part of the event, history books and plaques of recognition will be given to the guest of honor.

Also, the churchyard of Barasoain will be surrounded by exhibits and stalls made of bamboo.

The First Republic of the Philippines which is also the first republic in Asia was founded on January 23, 1899, following the oath-taking of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo after the Constitution of Malolos was made. ###
