PGB, NHCP to commemorate the 123rd anniversary of Rizal’s letter to the Women of Malolos

CITY OF MALOLOS-Come February 22, 2012, the Provincial Government of Bulacan, National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the Women of Malolos Foundation, Inc. will relive the fight for the right to education as they celebrate the 123rd anniversary of the well-known Letter of Rizal to the Women of Malolos at Casa Real, Plaza Rizal in this city.

In Rizal’s letter to the young women of Malolos written in 1889, the hero pays homage to the 20 courageous women of the town for their desire to educate themselves, truly, a liberating action at that time.

The 20 young women of Malolos courageously refused to surrender to friar power and were successful in their struggle for their right to education and to stop Filipino slavery.

Aside from the opening of Rizal exhibit, there will also be a wreath laying ceremony on the monument of the national hero and on the historical marker of the said Malolenyas.

The guests who are expected to grace the event are guest speaker Diosdado David Santos, Supreme Auditor of the Order of the Knights of Rizal; Sarita Zafra, the granddaughter of Alberta Uitangcoy, one of the 20 women of Malolos and Barbara Gonzalez, granddaughter of Rizal’s sister Maria Rizal. ###
