Bulacan to commemorate National Flag Day

CITY OF MALOLOS- After it was first raised on May, 28, 1898 in the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite where the troops of General Emilio Aguinaldo emerged victor, the Philippine National Flag has always been a symbol of independence in the country which pave the way in the celebration of the National Flag Day.

In accordance with Sec. 26 Republic Act 8491 also known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, the Provincial Government of Bulacan headed by Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado and Vice Governor Daniel R. Fernando will commemorate the 114th anniversary of the National Flag Day on May 28, 2012, 7:30 am, in front of the capitol building.

The said activity aims to celebrate and remind the people, especially the youth of the integrity and importance of the Philippine flag that served as an inspiration to the revolutionaries to fight for freedom during Aguinaldo’s time, truly a meaningful event that signified the sovereignty of the people of the Philippines.

“Dahil nga ito’y simbolo ng kalayaan nating mga Filipino, nararapat lamang na bigyan natin ito ng halaga, ito’y hindi isang tela lamang, ito ang nagbigay lakas sa ating mga bayani na huwag sumuko, ito’y paalala sa atin na marami ang nagbuwis ng buhay upang protektahan ito at ang karapatan ng ating bansa, kaya dapat igalang natin,” Alvarado said.

It is also stated in Executive Order 179 of 1994 that from May 28 to June 12 of each year, all offices agencies and instrumentalities of government, business establishments, and institutions of learning and private homes are enjoined to display the flag.

On the other hand, it also clearly states that the flag should not be displayed in cockpits, dance halls and centers of vice; should not be used as unveiling material in unveiling ceremonies; and tattered, faded or worn-out flags should be replaced immediately.

Highlights of the event are the flag raising and wreath laying ceremony at the Gregorio del Pilar shrine by the guest of honor, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Chairman Joel Villanueva.

The present Philippine Flag was designed by Aguinaldo and sewn by Doña Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad in HongKong prior to the proclamation of the Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898.###
