CITY OF MALOLOS— Clad in their tribal gears, 47 different indigenous groups descended into this historic capital city to showcase their rare crafts, rituals, cuisines, games, cultural performances and arts at the Dayaw 2012: Indigenous People’s Festival which kicked-off Tuesday morning and will last until Nov. 29 at the provincial capitol grounds here.

Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado welcomed the different cultural groups and said that indigenous people and their cultures will always remind the Filipino people of their rich diverse cultural heritage.

“Ang Dayaw Festival ay ang pagtatagpo ng mga katutubong pinaghiwalay ng lokasyon ngunit pinagkaisa ngayon upang ipaalala sa atin na dapat tayong lumilingon sa ating pinanggalingan at linangin ang mayaman nating katutubong kultura,” Alvarado said.

Felipe de Leon Jr., chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), said that the Dayaw Festival highlights the celebration of the National Indigenous Peoples Month which is anchored on the theme “Katutubong Pamumuhay, Halawan ng Aral sa Buhay.”

“This festival aims that the indigenous people become the teachers of the nation. Ituturo sa atin ng mga katutubo ang tunay na kahulugan at lalim ng kultura bilang mga Pilipino,” said De Leon.

He also said that it will help in uplifting the cultural industries and foster camaraderie among the indigenous people.

The festival highlights the Dayaw Village which includes the Masining na Pamumuhay (ritual/performing arts), Sining sa Hapag Kainan (food festival), Masining na Hanapbuhay (arts/crafts exhibit), Katutubong Laro (indigenous games), and Kwentuhan sa Sari-sari Store (informal forum).

An arts and craft sale bazaar also opened in the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium where the visitors can buy the products made by the indigenous people. Tours and other entertainment perks will be conducted for the participants to enjoy their stay in Bulacan.

This project is made possible through the efforts of the NCCA, Interskills Foundation Inc. and the Provincial Government of Bulacan. ###
