Bulacan hosts national chess fest

CITY OF MALOLOS- The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) is holding its Luzon leg of National Age-group Chess Championships on March 3-6 and the National Juniors Semi-finals on March 11-15 in this city.

The twin tournament spearheaded by NCFP led by Chairman Prospero Pichay in cooperation with the Provincial Government of Bulacan headed by Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado bankrolled by Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel through the effort of Bayan Muna Partylist Representative Neri Colmenares is open to all Filipino players 20 years old and below.

According to Pichay, elimination series is being held nationwide to select the qualifiers to the grand finals.

“The primary aim of the competition is to search and develop chess masters for future international competition,” he said.

Alvarado said that it is an honor for the historic province of Bulacan to host the event.

“We believe that nation-building depends mostly in developing the potentials of our young generation. Through this kind of sports events, we can help in discovering the next chess masters of our country,” the governor said.

In the Age-group event, aspirants will battle it out in the following categories: 20 years old and below, 16 years old and below, 14 years old and below, 12 years old and below, 10 years old and below and eight years old and below in both and women.

The Junior Semi-finals on the other hand is an open event where in the top ten winners in both men’s and women’s category will join the six men and women seeded players in the grand finals on April 1-10 in Taguig City while Age-group category champions together with Junior titled players will meet at the finals on April 11-19 also in Taguig City.###
