CITY OF MALOLOS. Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala awarded the Province of Bulacan through Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado as one of the top ten provinces to receive the Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers Awards, an initiative to honor the top rice achievers in the country at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

Alvarado received a plaque of recognition and a P4M project grant together with Ma. Glorial Carilio, Bulacan Provincial Agriculturist.

The governor is thankful for the award and said that Bulacan is in full support to the national government`s aim to make the Philippines a rice sufficient country.

Sec. Alcala said that Agri-Pinoy awards, now on its second year is one way of thanking the farmers in helping to increase the country`s harvest.

“We initiated the Rice Achievers’ Awards as part of the DA’s interventions and incentive system to encourage LGUs, irrigators’ associations (IAs) and agricultural extension workers (AEWs) to contribute their share in increasing farmers’ harvest and incomes, and subsequently attain national rice sufficiency,” Sec. Alcala said.

According to the DA the top provinces, and other awards were chosen based on incremental rice harvest and average yield per hectare over 2011 levels, increase if any over 2012 target, amount of budget devoted to rice projects and initiatives, number of farmers benefited, and degree of rice seed utilization, among other criteria.
