Bulacan Provincial Blood Center, now a leading service facility in Central Luzon
Wednesday, 24 April 2013
CITY OF MALOLOS— As a large scale producer of blood and blood products, the Bulacan Provincial Blood Center (BPBC) located in this city, was identified as highly capable in taking the lead of providing blood requirements in the region.

Dr. Jocelyn Gomez, Provincial Public Health Officer, said that the BPBC is a non-hospital based facility which is operated by the Provincial Government of Bulacan.

“According to the Department of Health Circular no. 2012-0359, the National Voluntary Blood Services Program (NVBSP) has set new policy direction to achieve its goal of a nationally coordinated and efficient blood service network. It includes designation of new Lead Blood Service Facility like that of the Bulacan Provincial Blood Center,” Gomez explained.

Aside from the distribution of blood and blood products to hospitals and other health facilities, its functions also cover advocacy, quality assurance program, monitoring rational and efficient use of blood products, financial management and regional blood program coordination.

Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado added that hospitals within four hours travel from BPBC may request for blood provisions.

“This new development is an opportunity for Bulacan to expand the services offered in this facility. Not only will the Bulakenyos benefit but as well as patients from nearby cities and provinces such as Metro Manila and Pampanga. We are also expecting more financial support from the national government, since formerly it was solely sustained through the local government funding,” the governor said.

The BPBC collects approximately 20,000 units of blood annually. It started its operation in February 24, 2004. Among the newly designated Lead Blood Service Facility in region 3 are Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center in Nueva Ecija and Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital in San Fernando City, Pampanga. ###
