Bulacan lines up programs to alleviate malnutrition
Tuesday, 02 July 2013
CITY OF MALOLOS – In observance of the Nutrition Month this July with the theme “Gutom at Malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan”, the Provincial Government of Bulacan thru the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office has lined up different programs to eradicate malnutrition in the province.

Programs include food festival, cooking contest, poster and slogan making contest in schools, information forum on the importance of nutrition, healthy baby contest and Mutya ng Breastfeeding in the towns and cities from July 2-30.

The Foods and Nutrition Research Institute will continuously conduct the National Nutrition Survey in the province together with volunteer workers to measure the nutritional status of Bulakenyos, starting from children to parents and even pregnant and lactating mothers.

Also, a monitoring of bakeries will be conducted to determine if there’s an addition to 127 (10%) out of 803 bakeries that uses malunggay as one of the ingredients in their product.

Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said the celebration aims to continuously raise the awareness of the public about the importance of proper nutrition and its contribution in achieving a better future of every individual.

Meanwhile, PSWDO Head Rowena Joson-Tiongson said that there is a simple solution to prevent hunger.

Tiongson emphasized the significance of malunggay, a simple but nutritious vegetable, which cannot be replaced by any milk products available in the market.

Moreover, the Breastfeeding Station was also formally launched in the Capitol in accordance to RA 10028 or Act Expanding the Promotion of Breastfeeding that aims to encourage women clients and employees who just gave birth and are currently breastfeeding to utilize the said facility by storing their milk in the station.

Tiongson added that outstanding municipalities, barangays and Lingkod Lingap sa Nayon who initiated and supported nutrition programs for 2011 will be recognized as part of the culmination activity.

The observance of Nutrition Program is in accordance to Presidential Decree 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines.
