CITY OF MALOLOS - The SMX Convention Center in SM Lanang Premier, Davao City, Davao Del Sur was jam-packed as more than 1,500 Information Officers from different regions in the country including the Information Officers of Bulacan (InfoBul), Inc. participated in the first ever National Information Convention organized by the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and Philippine Information Agency (PIA) from February 19-21, 2018.

The convention aims to encourage communicators to model effective and responsible sharing of information and use their platforms to provide information that will improve their audience’s quality of life; to strengthen partnership between private and public-sector communicators, with the goal of nurturing a well-informed and enlightened citizenry; and to organize a movement of communicators that will empower communities by inspiring civic engagement towards nation building.

According to Infobul, Inc. President Ronald Soriano and City of San Jose Del Monte Information Officer, it was a great opportunity for the group to be part of the said event because they have gained more learning that will help them to become efficient and appropriate information officers in their respective municipalities.

“On behalf of InfoBul, taus-puso kaming nagpapasalamat sa mga nanguna upang maging positibo ang gawaing ito. Marami kaming natutunan mula sa guest speakers gayundin, malinaw na naibaba sa amin ang mga programang naisaktuparan at maisasakatuparan pa sa administrasyon ni Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” Soriano said.

Anchored on the theme “Empowering Communities”, the following topics were discussed on the convention: 1) Understanding Government Programs and Policies; 2) Fostering a Safe and Healthy Media Environment; 3) Raising the Bar of Governance; 4) Promoting Responsible Communication; 5) Developing a Dynamic Development Communication Strategy; and 6) Engaging the Citizenry in Nation-Building.

Among the resource speakers were Sec. Jose Ruperto Martin Andanar of PCOO, Dr. Serafin D. Soriano, Deputy Executive Director of the Office of the Cabinet Secretary.

According to Maricel S. Cruz, head of the Provincial Public Affairs Office, secretariat of InfoBul, Inc., the said event was a big help to the organization and she is looking forward to having more of this kind of activity.

“Tunay na makabuluhan ang naging outcome ng convention. Hindi lamang na-empower ang mga communicator, higit rin nating naunawaan ang Freedom of Information gayundin ang posibilidad na magkaroon ng plantilla para sa mga IO sa tulong ni Sec. Andanar at pahintulot ng ating mahal na Pangulo,” Cruz said.

Meanwhile, aside from the plenary discussions and open forum, Sec. Andanar and the 17 representatives of the different regions in the country led the reading of ‘Declaration of Commitment to Responsible Communication’. An exhibit was also organized to showcase the PCOO’s services as well as its partner agencies and a trade fair.
