Nipa hut decorated with veggies from the song Bahay Kubo wins first place

CITY OF MALOLOS – The Kalipunan ng Kalalakihan Magsasaka ng Mataas na Parang from the town of San Ildefonso bagged the first place in the “Bahay Kubo, Bahay Gulay” competition that was opened on September 10-12, 2018 at the Provincial Cooperative and Enterprise Development Office (PCEDO) Grounds in this city.

Garnering a score of 90.33, they took home P30,000 cash incentive and certificate of recognition after decorating their nipa hut entry with vegetables mentioned in the folk song ‘Bahay Kubo’.

According to Nemencio Concepcion, adviser of the champion association, they included all the vegetables mentioned in the song Bahay Kubo including the sesame seed (linga).

“Masayang-masaya at nagpapasalamat kami dahil sa pagkakataong makalahok sa pagdiriwang ng Singkaban Festival, dinala namin ang lahat na gulay na sariwa,” Concepcion said.

He added that having no land or area for planting is not a hindrance because they showed in the design of their entry that planting can be done anywhere using certain things like broken boots, cans, and basins among others.

Landing on the second spot was the entry of the City of Malolos produced by the City Agriculture and Fisheries Council (CAFC) wherein the major design of their hut are various organic vegetables and different seafoods, different varieties of rice and poultry products like egg and most of all, the presentation on how to make vinegar out of sasa.

They garnered a score of 89.67 and took home P20,000 cash incentive and certificate of recognition.

Further, San Rafael Vegetable Growers Association of the town of San Rafael won third place with the grade of 86.33 and received P10,000 and certificate of recognition. Their entry highlighted different vegetables and old tools used in farming like lusong used in milling rice, salakab, bayong and many more.

The PAO said the participants will be judged according to beauty of their decoration and use of materials such as vegetable as the major decoration – 60%; indigenous materials – 20%; native/local materials – 10% and recycled materials – 10%.
